Altair 8800 and 8800b restoration

Apr 15, 2024

Historic computerist extraordinaire Brent Hilpert has completed a restoration/reconstruction of our two Altair computers (8800 and 8800b). Donated to the Lab back in 2016, these two computers were in very rough shape and required extensive work to restore their functionality. Thanks to Brent's heroic efforts, they are now in "better than new" condition.

The Altair is particularly significant in that, as the first commercially successful personal computer, it was of foundational importance in launching the PC industry shortly following its introduction in 1975. Both Microsoft and Apple can trace their roots back to the Altair. You can read more about the restoration project on Brent's website:

Our Altair 8800 will be featured in an exhibit in McPherson Library to celebrate its 50th anniversary in September 2025.
