Plan 9 in the Lab

May 13, 2026

The Historic Computing Lab was a proud sponsor of the 12th International Workshop on Plan 9, held in the Engineering/Computer Science building May 7th-10th.

The Plan 9 operating system was developed at Bell Labs beginning in the 1980s as a possible successor to Unix, by the original developers of Unix and other notable computer scientists. Although never widely deployed, it nevertheless took an innovative, distributed approach that makes it unique in the field. Over time an international community of developers coalesced around the project and they have continued to maintain and enhance Plan 9 up to the present day. The Workshops present an opportunity for the community to exchange ideas, share current initiatives, and collaborate on further development.

In addition to sponsoring the Workshop, attendees were invited to visit the Lab as an impromptu after hours event. A good time was had by all.

More info, recorded presentations and papers over at the Workshop site.
